2022 - JFM GWR Retro and Planning
Looking Back
- In the first season, the episodes were monologues. I spoke for 5 - 6 min on leadership topics.
- In the 2nd season, I interviewed “heroes among us” - people in the immediate and 2nd layer on the topics that interested me. Topics ranged from content marketing, homeschooling, data strategy, and like. There was no underlying theme. The only thread that connected all of that was my interest.
- The duration of the episodes were also not constant. Some were 30 min, but most were 45 - 70 min long.
- Reached 1230 downloads (as of 3rd Jan 2022). Received good feedback from most folks.
Lessons Learned
- Podcasts are like radio, non-intrusive. People listen to it when they are doing something else - walking, driving, cooking
- People are not listening to podcast with pen and paper with an intent to learn ⇒ you can’t go technically deeper. This doesn’t mean, the episodes should be shallow.
- Episodes should be combination of education + entertainment + inspirational. Listeners still want to learn something, they want to have a new insight about an existing problem or a new world unknown to them. But they want to know it in a fun way, in a narrative, in a life-experience manner rather than a lecture. And at the end, want some take always - a template or a play book that they can play with.
What worked best
- Since most topics were of interest to me and I had good knowledge of them, I was able to have deep and fun conversation with the guests.
- I knew the guests directly or they were known to a good friend (except Dr Deborah, an advisor to US Senate). This also contributed to the lively conversations.
- I couldn’t have such lively, engaging conversation with Dr Deborah since I didn’t know her much and the topic (one health) was new too.
Looking Forward
- 30 min interviews
- Topics = tech trends + business trends + psychology (since humans will have to implement these trends)
- Don't limit the topics to what people in my network can talk
- Don't be limited by "heroes among us" mantra. Reach out to experts who can bring clarity and depth. Depth = have practical experience.
- Don’t mind bringing the same guest again for a different dimension of the problem
